Fencing for Stamford families runs at Tim Morehouse Fencing Club in New Canaan, about 22 minutes from Stamford, at New Canaan Country School, 635 Frogtown Rd. Children from age five, teenagers and adults start with a $40 one-hour trial lesson with the gear provided. This desk books it; the club teaches it. How that works.

Fencing in Stamford itself

Stamford Fencing Club, at 745 E Main St, is not running classes and its website is down. If your child fenced there, or you were about to look it up, here is what we know and where that fencing went. The short version is that the nearest full program is now in New Canaan, and the drive is shorter than the map suggests.

That leaves Stamford, the largest city in the county, without a club inside its own line. The nearest full program, with classes, private lessons, camps and a competitive team, is the New Canaan club, and it is the one this desk books.

about, Stamford to the club

The drive from Stamford

New Canaan borders Stamford to the east, and the club sits on the New Canaan side of that line. From downtown, Springdale or Glenbrook, the run is north on High Ridge Road or Long Ridge Road to the Merritt Parkway, one short hop east, then local roads to Frogtown Road. From North Stamford the local roads are the whole route and the parkway never comes into it. Allow about 22 minutes from the centre of town; an evening class in the week means leaving in the tail of the commute, so the first trip is the one to time.

The desk texts the entrance and parking details with every booking.

Before you text

Have four things ready and the booking takes one exchange: who the lesson is for and their age, whether they have fenced before and in which weapon, which part of Stamford you are coming from, and which days could work. The desk books the trial lesson with the club and texts back the day and time, the entrance and parking at New Canaan Country School, and the short list of what to bring. If the first slot offered does not fit, say so; the desk sends the next one rather than leaving you to guess.

Why New Canaan and not somewhere closer

Because there is nowhere closer. Stamford's own club is not running classes, and the clubs that used to sit at either end of the county are gone or quiet. What is in New Canaan is not a stopgap: all three weapons, classes for every age from five up, private lessons, camps, and a competitive team whose fencers hold USA Fencing membership, in a club founded by a 2008 Olympic silver medalist. For a Stamford family that is a better program than the city had when it had one, about 22 minutes away.

Stamford questions people actually ask

Is there a fencing club in Stamford?

Stamford Fencing Club at 745 E Main St is not running classes, and its website is down. The nearest club with a full program is Tim Morehouse Fencing Club in New Canaan, about 22 minutes from Stamford, which teaches foil, epee and saber to children from five, teens and adults. That is the club this desk books.

My child fenced at Stamford Fencing Club. Can they carry on in New Canaan?

Yes. Tell the desk the weapon and roughly how long they fenced, so the club knows before the first hour rather than starting them over. Gear they already own comes with them. If they held USA Fencing membership for competitions, that membership is theirs and travels with them.

How long is the drive from Stamford, honestly?

About 22 minutes from the centre of town, less from North Stamford, which is on the New Canaan line. The first evening is the one to time, because a weekday class means leaving in the back end of the commute. After that it is a known run.

Does my five-year-old really get a whole hour?

The trial lesson is one hour with the gear provided, and the coach paces it for the age in front of them. Tell the desk the child's age when you text and the coach knows before you arrive. Young beginners spend the hour on footwork, balance and holding the weapon safely, in short pieces.

What does it cost after the trial?

The trial lesson is forty dollars. What a class block, a private lesson or a camp costs depends on the age group and the season, and this site does not print figures that go stale. Text the desk and you get the current numbers in one message.
