The trial lesson
Fencing in Fairfield County starts with one hour on the strip. The trial lesson at Tim Morehouse Fencing Club in New Canaan costs $40, lasts one hour, and the club provides the mask, jacket, glove and weapon. You bring sneakers, long athletic pants and water. Children from age five, teenagers and adults all start the same way, and nobody has to own anything before the first lesson.
Text the desk with who the lesson is for and their age. The desk books the slot with the club and texts you the day, the time, the entrance and parking at the school, and what to bring. One hour later you know whether this is the sport, and the coach has seen the fencer move. What a first lesson is like.
Ages and weapons
The club teaches all three weapons: foil, epee and saber. A beginner does not have to pick one before walking in. The coach watches the first hour and talks it through with you. How the three weapons differ.

Two clubs in the county have closed: Stamford Fencing Club and Fairfield Fencing Academy. If you fenced at either, the club in New Canaan is where most of that fencing went.
Send the details
Three fields: your phone, your town, and who the lesson is for. The desk texts back with the next open trial slot, and if it does not fit, the one after. Class times change by season, so text the desk for this week's times rather than planning around an old timetable. No price other than the $40 trial is printed here; the desk texts the current figures for classes, private lessons and camps when you ask.
Questions people actually ask
How old does my child have to be?
Five. The club takes children from age five, and the trial lesson is the same one hour with gear provided whatever the age. If your child is five or six and you are not sure they will last an hour, say so when you text and the desk will tell the coach, who can pace the hour around a young beginner.
Do we need to buy any equipment for the trial?
No. The mask, jacket, glove and weapon are provided for the trial lesson. Bring sneakers with a clean sole, long athletic pants or sweatpants, a t-shirt and a bottle of water. Buying gear is a conversation for after the trial, once you know your child wants to carry on, and the coach will tell you what is worth buying first.
Which weapon should a beginner start with?
You do not have to decide before the first lesson. The club teaches foil, epee and saber, and the coach sees your child move for an hour before suggesting one. Our guide on the three weapons explains what each one rewards, but the honest answer is that the coach's suggestion after the trial beats anything you can work out from a web page.
When are the classes?
Class times change by season and by age group, so this site does not print a timetable that would be wrong by the next school break. Text the desk for this week's times and the desk sends you the slots that fit your child's age.
Is the club really in New Canaan Country School?
Yes. Lessons run at Tim Morehouse Fencing Club at New Canaan Country School, 635 Frogtown Rd, New Canaan, CT 06840. The desk sends the entrance and parking details with your booking so you are not hunting for the right door on the first evening.
